Week 29: Wayne Dyer on Authentic Influence
Leading from Love, Not Fear
"Power is what happens when you are aligned with your highest self. Force is what happens when you are out of alignment." — David R. Hawkins
Dear Sanctuary Seekers,
Here’s a truth the ego hates:
You can’t force real influence.
You can only become someone who naturally inspires it.
Wayne Dyer understood this deeply.
He taught that true power arises from inner alignment — not authority, not domination, not fear, not pressure.
Force demands compliance.
Power awakens possibility.
Force pushes people.
Power pulls people upward.
Force comes from insecurity.
Power comes from authenticity.
This week, we explore the psychology and neuroscience behind leading from love rather than fear — the kind of influence that doesn’t require effort, performance, or manipulation… only alignment.
Power vs. Force: The Psychology Behind the Distinction
David R. Hawkins, in Power vs. Force, defined force as control-based influence — something that drains both the self and others.
Power, in contrast, is presence-based influence — something that uplifts and energizes.
Modern psychology echoes this.
Force (fear-based influence) is rooted in:
Threat
Scarcity
Shame
Overcontrol
Ego protection
Emotional reactivity
Research on authoritarian leadership shows it leads to:
Higher cortisol levels in teams (Sherman et al.)
Reduced creativity (Zhang & Bartol)
Avoidance-based compliance
Poor psychological safety (Edmondson)
Power (authentic influence) is grounded in:
Self-regulation
Values alignment
Emotional intelligence
Compassion
Clarity
Inner stability
Research on transformational leadership shows it creates:
Higher trust
Greater wellbeing
Increased motivation
Higher team performance (Bass & Riggio)
Force changes behavior temporarily.
Power changes people permanently.
Wayne Dyer’s Model of Authentic Influence
Wayne Dyer taught that the highest form of influence comes not from controlling others but from embodying the truth of who you are.
He wrote:
“When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”
Modern research confirms this:
Emotionally regulated, self-aligned individuals activate co-regulation in others through the social engagement system (Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory).
Your inner state becomes a field that others unconsciously respond to.
This is authentic leadership:
Influence through resonance, not resistance.
The Neuroscience of Leadership: How Love Regulates, Fear Dysregulates
Interpersonal neuroscience reveals a profound truth:
Fear-based influence triggers:
Amygdala activation
Fight/flight responses
Cognitive narrowing
Reduced empathy
Heightened defensiveness
People become reactive, not reflective.
Love-based influence triggers:
Ventral vagal activation
Oxytocin release
Broaden-and-build cognition (Fredrickson)
Higher trust
Greater cooperation
People become creative, open, and engaged.
The state of the leader shapes the state of the system.
The Ego’s Leadership Trap
Fear-based leadership arises when the ego is in charge. The ego believes:
“I need to control.”
“I need them to approve.”
“I need to stay dominant.”
“I need to protect my image.”
Jung would call this the ego’s defense against vulnerability.
But the more the ego grasps, the less influence it actually has.
Real leadership — as Wayne Dyer taught — emerges from the higher self, not the defended self.
Alignment replaces ambition.
Presence replaces performance.
Authenticity replaces authority.
The Spiritual Psychology of Influence
Many wisdom traditions echo the same principle:
Taoism — Wu Wei
Not forcing the river; flowing with it.
Buddhism — Compassionate Presence
Influence through non-attachment and understanding.
Christian Mysticism — Leading by Love
Christ-conscious leadership rooted in compassion.
Sufism — Presence as Divine Radiance
The heart influences more deeply than the mind.
Across all traditions:
Force fractures.
Love harmonizes.
Presence transforms.
Your Alignment Practice: The POWER Protocol
P — Pause Before Action (1–2 minutes)
Research on emotional regulation shows a brief pause helps shift from reactive to reflective states.
Ask: “Am I acting from fear or truth?”
O — Open the Body
Relax shoulders, jaw, belly.
A softened body signals safety to your nervous system and others.
W — Witness Your Motive
Is this coming from:
Ego?
Control?
Anxiety?
Approval-seeking?
Or from:Clarity
Compassion
Alignment
Integrity
E — Express from the Higher Self
Say the thing that is true, not the thing that is defensive.
R — Return to Love
Anchor back into the kind of person you want to be in this moment.
In neuroscience terms, this shifts you from an amygdala-driven state to a prefrontal-integrated state — where wise leadership emerges.
The Weekly Influence Experiment
Days 1–2: Notice Your Force Patterns
Where do you push?
Where do you demand?
Where do you tighten?
Identify three areas where fear drives influence attempts.
Days 3–4: Practice Power Over Performance
Shift from “How can I get them to…”
to
“What’s true for me to embody here?”
Document what shifts.
Days 5–7: Embodiment of Calm Influence
Before an interaction:
Slow breath
Softened posture
Clear intention
Open heart
Then observe:
Does the conversation flow differently?
Do people respond differently?
Does life become smoother?
(Research shows people are 30–50% more cooperative when the other person is in a regulated state.)
The Authentic Influence Paradox
The more you try to control others, the less you influence them.
The more you embody your truth, the more naturally influence you become.
Force demands power.
Power requires none.
Force manipulates outcomes.
Power inspires them.
Force is ego.
Power is essence.
As Wayne Dyer taught:
“When you stay connected to the Source, every action becomes inspired.”
Leadership is not about getting people to follow you.
It is about becoming someone worth following.
Until next Sunday,
TT 💛
