Dear Sanctuary Seekers,
Somewhere along the path to adulthood, many of us lose a precious gift we didn’t realize we were giving away:
Wonder.
Curiosity.
Play.
Awe.
The ability to see the world as if for the first time.
But here’s the truth modern neuroscience now confirms:
Your inner child is not a memory.
It is a neurological pattern — still alive, still accessible, still wired into your brain.
The capacity for wonder is not lost.
It is dormant.
Today, we explore the neuroscience, psychology, and contemplative wisdom behind beginner’s mind — and how reconnecting with playful curiosity can rewire your brain, restore joy, and awaken a deeper sense of aliveness.
The Neuroscience of Wonder: Why It Fades — and How to Reclaim It
As the brain matures, it shifts from exploration to efficiency.

B — Breathe Into Presence
Take one slow inhale.
Feel your senses awaken.
Wonder begins in the body, not the mind.
E — Engage the Unknown
Ask:
“What here have I never noticed before?”
Choose one object, sound, or sensation to examine with fresh curiosity.
G — Get Playful
Do something miniature, simple, and non-productive:
doodle
skip a step
hum
rearrange something
taste something slowly
follow a whim
I — Interrupt the Automatic
Take a different route.
Choose a new flavor.
Change your routine.
Micro-novelty = micro-plasticity.
N — Notice the Lift
Ask:
“What shifted in my mind or body?”
This reinforces the neural reward of wonder.
BEGIN is how the adult reopens the child’s pathways.
The Weekly Wonder Experiment
Days 1–2: Micro-Awe Moments
Spend 30 seconds looking at:
the sky
your own hand
a leaf
a candle flame
a stranger’s smile
shadows on a wall
Let yourself marvel.
Days 3–4: Play Activation
Choose one playful act a day:
dance for 20 seconds
build something small
draw a circle or swirl
talk in a silly voice
wear something colorful
Neuroscience shows even tiny acts of play trigger expansive neural networks.
Days 5–7: Beginner’s Mind Practice
Pick something familiar — your home, your face, your meal, your routine.
See it as if encountering it for the first time.
Journal:
“What is here that I never noticed before?”
This rewires perception.
The Wonder Paradox
We grow up not when we lose wonder —
but when we forget it is still available.
Childhood is not behind you.
It is a neurological state you can re-enter.
A way of perceiving.
A way of exploring.
A way of being alive.
Wonder is the doorway back to yourself:
the curious self

the alive self
And the deeper truth?
You don’t need to find your inner child.
