The Benefits of Body Positivity and How to Cultivate It
The concept that all bodies are valuable and worthy of love and respect is known as “body positivity.” In a world where unrealistic beauty standards are constantly pushed, it is important to be positive about your body if you want to boost your self-esteem and have a healthy body image. In this post, we'll look at the benefits of body positivity and how to foster it.
What exactly is Body Positivity?
Body positivity is a social movement that encourages people to be positive and accepting of their own bodies, no matter what shape, size, or look they have. It underlines the importance of all bodies as valued and deserving of love and respect. This movement seeks to challenge the media's false beauty standards and to encourage self-love and acceptance.
The Advantages of Body Positivity
Increases Self-Esteem: Body positivity can improve your self-esteem and confidence, which can benefit your mental health. Exercises that can be done to help promote this are as follows:
Every day, write down five things you like about yourself.
Make a list of your accomplishments and refer to it when you're feeling down.
Body Positivity Helps Improve Body Image: Embracing body positivity can help improve your body image and develop a healthy relationship with your body. Exercises that can be done to help promote this are as follows:
Place yourself in front of a mirror and concentrate on the aspects of your physique that you enjoy.
Wear clothes that make you feel confident in your own skin.
Take a social media break or unfollow profiles that do not instill feelings of positivity. Also, note that most of the people in magazines and social media don’t look like themselves IRL!
Enhances Overall Well-Being: You may improve your general well-being and enjoy a happier life by creating a positive body image. Exercises that can be done to help promote this are as follows:
Connect with your body by practicing mindfulness or meditation.
To feel better in your body, go for a walk or perform some mild exercise.
Do something that will help you feel better about yourself, such as getting a haircut or taking up a new activity.
Reduces Stress: When you embrace and love your body, you'll be less concerned about how you look, which can improve your mental health.
Make a list of your negative ideas and counter them with positive affirmations.
Take a break from social media and anything else that makes you think negatively.
To relax your mind and body, try deep breathing or relaxation exercises.
How to Develop Body Positivity
Practice Self-Care: Self-care is an important aspect of fostering body positivity. Make time for self-care activities that make you happy, such as soaking in a relaxing bath or getting a massage.
Surround Yourself with Positive Messages: Surround yourself with positive body positivity messages. Follow body-positive influencers on social media, read body-positive publications, and surround yourself with people who encourage and support you.
Focus on Your Strengths: Instead of focusing on your perceived flaws, focus on your strengths. Celebrate what makes you distinct and remarkable.
Reframe Negative Thoughts: Reframe negative thoughts about your body in a good way. Instead of thinking, "I despise my thighs," consider, "My thighs are strong and help me move across the world." I highly recommend you check these songs out if you need inspiration (and dancing to them is mandatory):
"Scars to Your Beautiful" by Alessia Cara - This song encourages listeners to embrace their imperfections and love themselves just the way they are.
"All About That Bass" by Meghan Trainor - This upbeat and catchy song celebrates curves and promotes body positivity.
"Confident" by Demi Lovato - This empowering song encourages listeners to be confident in themselves and their bodies.
"Born This Way" by Lady Gaga - This iconic song (my personal favorite of the list) celebrates individuality and self-expression and encourages listeners to embrace their unique qualities.
"Good as Hell" by Lizzo - This upbeat song promotes self-love and confidence and encourages listeners to let go of negative thoughts and embrace their inner strength.
For kids, I recommend they watch "Reflect,” a short film now on Disney+ about a ballerina who overcomes her fear by channeling inner strength and self-acceptance.
Exercise Gratitude: Take some time to appreciate your body for all that it does for you. Make a list of things for which you are grateful, such as your capacity to walk, dance, or breathe.
But, But, But …
What if I dislike the way my physique appears?
A. It's natural to have negative views about your body, but it's critical to confront these thoughts and focus on your body's positive characteristics. Remember that all bodies are valuable and deserve to be loved and respected.
Is body positivity limited to women?
A. No, everyone can benefit from body positivity. A positive body image can help people of all genders, shapes, and sizes.
What can I do to help the body positivity movement?
A. The first thing is to love yourself. You can help the body positivity movement by encouraging self-love and acceptance. One of my friends, who I had initially thought was bearing his soul to me, said the following, which I think everyone should think:
“Sometimes it feels like everyone is ignoring me or doesn’t want to talk to me, I have to stop and ask myself a serious question:
Is it because I’m too sexy?”
It’s A Wrap!
Finally, body positivity is a necessary component of living a healthy and joyful life. By being kind and accepting of our bodies, we can boost our self-esteem, improve how we feel about ourselves, and improve our overall health.
Having a positive view of your body takes time and work, but the benefits are well worth it. We can learn to love and appreciate our bodies for all they do for us by taking care of ourselves, surrounding ourselves with positive messages, focusing on our strengths, facing our negative beliefs, and practicing gratitude.
Let's work together to spread body positivity and make the world more inclusive and welcoming of all bodies.
Remember that all bodies are valued and deserving of love and respect and that by accepting this truth, we can live a more satisfying life.
And remember, sometimes it’s just because you’re too sexy.
